This work is a publication of texts which were excavated in 1907 at Deir el-Bala'izah, situated some 12 miles south of Assyut on the west bank of the Nile on the edge of the desert. The excavation was performed by the British School of Archeology under Sir W. M. Flinders Petrie. A short account was given in Egypt Exploration Fund, Archeological Report 1906-1907 p. 29 and p. 75. The manuscripts are now in the Bodleian Library. The great importance of this work is that not only the texts have been published, but also that the author in a number of introductory chapters gives a valuable contribution to the study of the Coptic dialects. The literary mss. are of great value. Some of them belong to the earliest known in Coptic. Among the Old Testament mss. is one of the 4th century; several are the only proof for the existence of a Sahidic version of the Old Testament. Also for the New Testament there are mss., dating from the 4th and 5th century. Further this collection contains an apocryphal gospel, a sermon of Athanasius, homilies and a martyrdom. Moreover the collection contains 300 non-literary documents, which are to be dated between 675 and 775, and various Greek and Arabic mss
