Three months after the democratic revolution over there, they are shaking each others' hands over here the politicians have become businessmen, the intellectuals have metamorphosed into bards of German unity. Giinter Grass is castigated in the literary supplements, and in the talk shows the very sight of a leftist economics professor is enough to transform friendly ladies and gentlemen of the middle class into a mob. Today the self-torturing, superfluous question is finally justified: What will become of the identity of the Germans? Will economic problems guide the process of unification onto sober pathways? Or will the D-Mark become the object of libido, emotionally revalued so that a kind of economic-nationalism will overwhelm republican consciousness? The question is open, but it demands to be answered in view of the psychic damage already caused by the conquests of western political parties in the East. It is difficult not to write a satire about the first flowerings of chubbyfaced DM-nationalism. The triumphant Chancellor let the thin but honest Prime Minister' know the conditions under which he was willing to buy up the GDR; in terms of monetary policy he pumped up the voters of an Alliance for Germany blackmailed into existence by himself;2 in
