On the incineration of children in tophets at Carthage and Susa The charred remains of very young children deposited in urns in tophets at Carthage and Susa are examined in the light of teachings from comparative archaelogy, anthropology and forensic medicine. This examination does not permit us to say whether the children were dead or alive when cremated, but enables us to rediscover some of the gestures made during the ceremony, including the construction of individual pyres, the immobilization and installation of children, the immolation of victims, the extinction of burning coals or the cooling of ashes... As a result, a partial and provisional reconstruction of the procedures followed for this celebration is proposed
