Crypto-Judaism and Inquisition. The Jewish material in the Edicts of Faith of the Iberian Inquisitions The edict of faith, promulgated periodically when the Inquisition was in force in the Spanish and Portuguese empires, was a meticulous inventory of heretical practises and expressions. Among them crypto-judaism held a privileged position in that it ranked first among the crimes and provided the most substantial part. The study aims to 1) set out the major phases of the history of the edict both in Spain and Portugal ; 2) describe the contents of the Jewish material in the versions in use in the Iberian world and record its evolution ; 3) assess the contents (authentically Jewish on the whole) and how they evolved which reveals two different styles and two destinies : an immutable monolithic block in Spain contrasting with a wise gradual adaptation observable in Portugal
