By combining the parish and manufacture records, it was possible to reconstitute the career of the workers of a major Swiss manufacture of printed calico. From this study one gathers that children join the manufacture at quite an early age (as early as 5). That professional initiation is gradual, since, for some categories, it is spread over 20 years. Working stability is important owing to the real careers granted men and women, characterized by subtle hierarchical and wage progression. They most generally work until their last breath, though the wearing out of their working strength does not seem to mark the end of their lives, which, besides, happens at a relatively old age. This survey thus adds elements yet unknown to the study of social transition, which seems to have taken in the calico printing sector, rather gentle and original forms
