The testimony.A comparative analysis of various types of testimonies by survivors from Auschwitz-Birkenau, ranging from legal depositions to autobiographical writings and life stories collected in the context of an oral history project, shows that recourse to each of these different forms of testimony implies a different content as regards what is related, and a different meaning as regards its function (ranging form the reconstitution of events to the regaining of a sense of identity).Such an analysis makes it possible to show how sampling procedures, the method, and the object analysed are mutually interdependent : if any one of these three constitutive elements of a scientific construct varies, then the other two also change.By this means one is able to reassess how the various theoretical interpretations of survival in situations of extremity (in which the theories of Bruno Bettelheim and Terrence Des Près represent the two opposing poles) stand in relation to the empirical material which supports or contradicts them.It thus becomes possible to shed light on certain problems which have not been adequately addressed in this literature
