How do children from different cultural backgrounds who are learning to speak English respond to the Reggio Emilia approach? This article builds on the author's research into Reggio Emilia and children from diverse cultural backgrounds. She describes the strategies the teachers used to enable the children to express their ideas verbally and visually and work collaboratively when they did not share a common language or cultural background. Over the course of the school year, the author found that the children used play and materials as their strongest voices in communicating their ideas and in overcoming the cultural and language barriers in the classroom. The children were able to form a productive learning group and with teacher support carry out complex imaginative project work and engage in many of the pedagogical processes inspired by Reggio Emilia
