I (Dan) agreed to participate in this theme issue because I believe the question of relationships between practice and contemporary curriculum theory is important and enticing. At the same time, I felt compelled to approach the challenge with practitioners-the very people those of us who attend to curriculum studies write so much about and for. I set out to find two educators with the time, desire, and ability to participate in an exploration of the extent to which contemporary curriculum ideas are alive in their schools. I sought doctoral students with whom I had worked in class, reasoning that they would (a) be aware of curriculum as a field of study in general, and (b) have been introduced to contemporary curriculum ideas in particular. Additionally, I suspected that doctoral students would be willing to commit to writing to a deadline and find the chore of writing for publication somewhat alluring. I hoped to find two very different practitioners-different in such areas as life experiences, professional roles, race, gender, and fundamental beliefs.
