Martha Davis Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital Philadelphia, Pennsylvania L the flourish of research exemplified by Gesell and his associates in the 1930s, motor development was a critical dimension for assessing an infant's general development.' When the baby focussed, held up its head, sat, stood, walked, and so on were carefully plotted as developmental landmarks, the observable manifestations of neurophysiological maturation. Later Piaget would underline the importance of motor patterns in the development of concept formation during the sensorimotor period. But once the child begins to talk and perform complex activities the minutiae of body movements so carefully attended to in its infancy appear largely ignored by researchers. The role of movement in mental development according to the literature would appear to stop after early childhood. There has been continuing interest in the question of whether level of motor ability correlates with intelligence, but the question of movement correlates of cognitive functioning in general has been neglected until very recently
