Christine H. Rossell Political Science Department Boston University Boston, Massachusetts T his paper describes a study of ten northern and southern school districts and the effect that community leadership and the news media have on protest and white flight associated with court ordered school desegregation. The effect of school desegregation on white flight from the public schools is a topic that has been embroiled in controversy since Coleman's now infamous paper, Recent Trends in School Integration, presented at the American Educational Research Association meeting in April 1975. That paper concluded that extremely strong reactions of individual whites in moving their children out of large districts engaged in massive and rapid desegregation suggests that in the long run the policies that have been pursued will defeat the purpose of increasing overall contact among the races in schools. This contrasted markedly in both findings and tone with other studies on the subject that indicated there was little or no white flight associated with school desegregation.2
