entiation when works coexist not only with a public which receives them, but with qualified representatives of this public, who are the first to express what others feel less clearly. It is then that we witness the emergence of specifically critical texts, forming a class of their own, constituting a distinct genre (and demanding in turn the specialized attention of the historian). But this division of labor, this clear-cut distinction between creation and criticism, this intervention of the demands of is only one reaction-albeit a relatively sophisticated one-to the presence of works; it is a response which implies the emergence of a new public (that of critics) recruited among the readers of Interest must then be aroused not only for the works themselves, but also for those works which take other texts as their object. There are, however, types of reaction other than specialized discourse -reactions which are at first less sophisticated, less confined to their secondary role of reflective discourse whose object is the creative discourse of literature. These reactions are no less important for not always being detectable. Chronologically they precede explicit criticism; yet they contribute to a better understanding of the circumstances in which it originated as well as of the reasons of its appearance. Moreover, among the reflections which apply specifically to works, the variety of attitudes and the diversity of the means of approach cannot be understood in terms of changes in literary taste alone. When one considers closely what has been said of works [oeuvres de langage], when one examines the statements and criteria of critical judgments, as well as the changing roles ascribed to those whom today we call writers, one comes to realize that what is at stake
