As young man, intensely concerned in the first few years after his doctorate with the anthropological basis of the art history of his time, Aby Warburg returned from year's military service to the study of Renaissance civilization in Florence. In his thesis, he had described one pronouncement of Jacob Burckhardt's as infallibly correct; namely, that Italian festive pageantry in its more elevated cultural forms is a true transition from life into art.i
