Até bem pouco tempo, os sociólogos resistiam em admitir que as mudanças econômicas e sociais produzidas pela revolução da informática são tão profundas quanto aquelas provocadas pela revolução industrial. Mas, pouco a pouco, vemos desenvolver-se uma sociologia digital. Este artigo inicia examinando, em breves linhas, como a busca e o acesso à literatura, enquanto atividade rotineira, cotidiana, das ciências sociais, transformou-se, a partir das novas tecnologias digitais. Em seguida, o artigo examina especificamente os avanços nas pesquisas do tipo survey, nas entrevistas individuais e nos métodos experimentais, como exemplos das formas em que determinadas abordagens da sociologia se transformaram com o uso de novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação. Assim como a Internet, em uma perspectiva mais ampla, estas novas tecnologias apresentam desafios e oportunidades. Para destacar a ambiguidade da situação, o artigo conclui com uma discussão sobre as oportunidades e desafios que emergem da crescente importância social assumida pelos sites de redes sociais e outras formas de dados digitais, bem como da criação de ferramentas analíticas para garimpar, extrair e codificar estes dados
