In this collection of essays, edited by Stephen Warren, the reader is presented with a work of significant scholarship that is also accessible to a general audience. Warren has organized the book into four parts; Part I is an introduction to the history of the Eastern Shawnee; Part II explores the recovery of Eastern Shawnee sovereignty and history through treaties and law; Part III continues with a series of essays by tribal members: and with Part IV is a series of transcripts from interviews of Shawnee elders. The book has an online teaching guide that will make it of particular value for use in the classroom. Warren makes clear from the outset that this is decolonizing scholarship, one that is community driven. For example, the Eastern Band of Shawnee Cultural Advisory Council participated in the selection of subjects; dealt with matters of cultural and community privacy; and chose which elders to include in interviews (p. x). This book reflects the mutual respect that Warren has established through years of working with the Eastern Shawnee community, including members such as Chief Glenna Wallace and Second Chief Benjamin J. Barnes. It is an impressive example of community -ased participatory research and ethnohistory.
