Marriage is treated as a mental concept that evolves in a developmental sequence of four qualitatively distinct stages. The first stage is Magical, like the view of marriage in fairy tales. The second is the Idealized Conventional stage in which socially-approved ideas of marriage are uncritically accepted. The next, Individualistic stage, involves a self-reflective, personal definition of marriage. In the final Affirmational stage, confusion and conflict are accepted as part of all human conditions, including marriage. Each stage is illustrated with excerpts from Ingmar Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage. Some applications for marriage counselors are suggested
