In opposition to the modern category of constitution, which has become in some sense irrelevant for contemporary forms of organizing subjective life, this article sets out to explore the hermeneutic possibilities of Maurice Merleau-Ponty's proposal for a phenomenology of the institution. Specifically, it points out some of the consequences that stem from this project and that allow new perspectives to be developed from its basic intuitions. Toward this end, the author first sketches the general features of this phenomenology in opposition to its Husserlian origin beholden to the concept of constitution. Then she draws out one of the key concepts organizing this phenomenology of the institution, namely, the concept of personal life, and examines its intrinsically polemical nature. Finally, the author seeks to demonstrate the consequence of the theoretical operation implied by the project of a phenomenology of the institution as opposed to the modern model of constitution
