Based on an analysis of cases culled from the literature and collected in the field, a model of small-scale participatory development projects is constructed. The article begins with an attempt to anchor participation within development theory. Then critera for what, on this basis, should be considered a successful project are spelled out. Selected problems, connected with the economic, the organizational and the educational aspects of participatory projects are dealt with in turn.
