A BOUNDARY, like the human skin, may have of its own or may reflect the of the body.' This dual division of illnesses is appropriate to the internal boundaries of Nigeria, and an examination of these boundaries, their nature, history, and stability, is timely in view of the approaching independence of the Federation. The second category of diseases is represented by the ethnic boundary problems that reflect the changed character and interrelationships of the component Nigerian states. Since 1946 they have all experienced a tremendous growth of regional consciousness, and it is this factor more than any other that has led to the upsurge of dissatisfaction with the regional boundaries-boundaries which, it must be remembered, had existed without complaint or friction for nearly 45 years. The ethnic problems have been much publicized in the press and other media. The geographer, however, would be neglecting his responsibility if he considered only actual boundary problems and ignored potential ones. Nigeria's potential boundary problems arise from the nature of the boundaries and therefore belong to the first category of diseases mentioned above. Unlike the ethnic problems, they have not been recognized in Nigeria. If a boundary problem can be recognized before it begins to arouse regional feelings, its solution should be easier. It is in this spirit that the second part of this paper examines the nature of the regional boundaries
