Ramón Magsaysay—the Myth and the Man
Ramón Magsaysay became a phenomenon in Philippine politics after World War ii . In less than a decade, he rose from managing a bus company to governing his homeland. Magsaysay died tragically in a plane crash near the end of his only term as president and students of Philippine affairs have been left to speculate about what might have been a different subsequent course of affairs in this Southeast Asian nation. This paper argues that the so-calle…
Resolving Cross-Strait Relations Between China and Taiwan
Much has been written about the legal relationship between China and Taiwan. The discussion often focuses on whether the People’s Republic of China (PRC) or the Republic of China (ROC) is the government of China or what entity has territorial sovereignty over Taiwan. 1 It is hard to find definitive answers to these questions. This article seeks to reexamine aspects of the issues in the light of the relevant historical facts and contemporary inter…

The Maritime Political Boundaries of the World
This book addresses the often vexed question of national maritime claims and the delimitation of international maritime boundaries. The number of undelimited international maritime boundaries is much larger than the number of agreed lines. The two boundaries that define the marine domain of coastal states are examined. First the baselines along the coast may consist of low-water lines or straight lines or a combination of both. When straight line…

Map of Mainland Asia by Treaty
This aims to provide comprehensive study of the evolution of the boundaries of Asia. The centuries of jostling and conflict - in some cases still continuing - are encompassed in one volume. Treaties are drawn together from widely scattered sources and various languages, and some are published in English for the first time. All the agreements are accompanied by analysis of the political and geographical background. It is an invaluable work of refe…

The Function and Methods of Electoral Geography
The earliest electoral study was by E. Krebheil who examined significance of geographic influences in analysis of British Parliamentary elections between 1885 and 1910.2 His paper was based on belief that men's actions are often determined by public opinion, which can be measured only by election results. He therefore examined election results in their territorial context to discover the natural influences upon political preference. The paper was…

Overpopulation and Overstocking in the Native Areas of Matabeleland
Scott has shown that land alienation in some African territories is causing con? siderable problems of population and stock congestion in the native areas (S ott, 1951; Fair, 1945; Doveton, 1937). These have been perennial problems which, all other solutions failing, have often been temporarily relieved by the extension of the native area into unallocated land. In Southern Rhodesia this palliative has been used three times, in 1930, 1950 and 1954…
Nigeria's Regional Boundary Problems
A BOUNDARY, like the human skin, may have of its own or may reflect the of the body.' This dual division of illnesses is appropriate to the internal boundaries of Nigeria, and an examination of these boundaries, their nature, history, and stability, is timely in view of the approaching independence of the Federation. The second category of diseases is represented by the ethnic boundary problems that reflect the changed character and interrelation…

Population Distribution in Southern Rhodesia
THIS dictum by Professor Steel has been partly answered by Trewartha and Zelinsky in their survey of tropical Africa in 1954, and by other geographers2 in studies of specific African areas. The present paper is aimed at further reducing the gap in the knowledge of population distribution in Africa, through a consideration of Southern Rhodesia, where serious problems of overpopulation and overstocking in native areas have been revealed.3

Sand Formations in the Niger Valley between Niamey and Bourem
Niamey and the two cuestas of massive Cambrian sandstone which are aligned ENE.WSW., between 12 and 20 kilometres north of Ayerou. Here dunes are rare on the Tertiary sandstone plateaus between Tillaberi and Niamey and only a little more frequent in the tributary valleys. All the dunes examined were fixed by grass and were only recognizable as low ridges, less than 6 metres high, which had evidently been much degraded. All the dunes appeared to b…
