Survey, documentation, and excavation projects carried out at Aphrodisias in 1996 included the continuation of the geophysical survey begun in 1995 of the northern part of the site and further work on the Stadium, North Temenos House, Bouleuterion, North Agora, and Sebasteion. In addition, the regional survey begun in 1993 was continued with a study visit to a newly discovered site in the Maeander River valley; two new inscriptions from the site are discussed in an epigraphical appendix. Sculpture conservation projects included the restoration and installation in the Aphrodisias Museum of a female portrait statue of the mid-second century A. D., and of a Roman Seasons sarcophagus. Study projects were completed on the sculptor's practice pieces from the site, the Late Roman figured pilaster capitals, and a group of portrait statues from the East Bouleuterion area
