The problem discussed is the nature of the turn in the ancient Greek foot races. New evidence from Nemea proves that the turn in the long distance races (dolichos and hippios) was around a single post, and forces a re-examination of the evidence for the turn in the middle distance races. The conclusion is reached that, in the diaulos and the hoplitodromos, the turn was around individual posts. This conclusion forces consideration of the need for, and the evidence of, marked lanes for the runners in those two events. It is suggested that those competitors ran down the track in individual and alternate lanes, turned individual posts, and ran back up the track to the finish line in adjacent lanes, and that these lanes were marked out with lime
