The author attempts to demonstrate that the synoptic accounts of the baptism of Jesus rely upon a tradition which makes use of a double typology , Adamic and messianic, and that they present Jesus as both the New Adam and the Messiah-King-Priest-Prophet. He then attempts to demonstrate that this interpretation of the baptism of Jesus was not without consequence in the understanding of baptism among the first Christians, who considered themselves to be dependant upon the dignity of Christ and participants of the recently instituted new Creation
