As part of its work to reform geography teaching in the French state school system, the Commission de l'Enseignement de la Geographie (1871-75) collected reports on the nature and status of geography teaching in the schools of several other, mainly European, countries. The information provided by the French Consulate in London is reproduced and discussed as a commentary on the state of geography teaching in Britain at that time. From the information contained in this report and in the minutes of the meetings of the Commission, an attempt is made to identify some of the geography texts and atlases in use in English schools during this period of the nineteenth century
