Since the time of its registration in the British Museum's collections in 1866, the so-called "Kythnos Hoard" of Early Cycladic tools, first fully published in AJA 71 (1967), has been thought to consist of 10 items. Documentary evidence suggests, however, that only eight pieces originally came to the Museum in 1864. Scientific examination confirms that two of the 10 objects are unlikely to belong. While these two pieces are now without associations, the remaining eight can be shown to have been part of a larger hoard, consisting of 12 objects, four of which are now in the National Museum, Copenhagen. This newly reconstructed hoard was found not on Kythnos, but on the island of Naxos
