Dans le théâtre de Ménandre, les riches se distinguent par un mode de vie qui les met à l'abri du risque d'exclusion du corps politique. Eux aussi sont pourtant les jouets de la Fortune (tychè) et n'ont pas plus que les pauvres prise sur les événements. Dérisoires et falots, ils sont les victimes de l'ironie de Ménandre qui leur concède une place dans son utopie fondée sur l'alliance entre riches et pauvres grâce aux mariages et à la participation à des fêtes communes
