This century has been a time of dramatically shifting goals in the organization of American society. The first half of the century focused upon the Americanization of diverse European ethnic groups. With Gunnar Myrdal's An American Dilemma,I the race riots during World War II, and the litigation battles that culminated in the 1954 Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education Supreme Court decision, attention shifted toward those racial minorities who continued to be excluded from assimilation in the melting pot. With the advent of Black Power in the late 1960s, the focus again shifted, from individual integration to equal access to power and economic resources by groups of people, especially Blacks and Hispanics. Building on the work of Pierre van den Berghe,2 three categories best describe America's attempts to bring order to its multi-ethnic society: stratified pluralism, with castelike characteristics; egalitarian pluralism on the Swiss consociative model; and a society of uniform incorporation, a colorblind society. Pierre van den Berghe draws upon the work of Furnival3 and M. G. Smith4 in suggesting his three categories. Structural plural
