L'identité est définie avant tout par la filiation, et la souffrance de l'exil se rapporte d'abord à la famille, plus qu'au pays ou à l'ethnie. Aussi l'auteur analyse-t-il ce qui se passe lors des ruptures d'exil, lors de ces retours ponctuels préfigurant un hypothétique retour définitif. Il tente de penser son statut personnel d'exilé en le confrontant à sa position par rapport à un espace familial qui, année après année, finit par se confondre avec le cimetière du village. C'est en ce sens que la condition de l'aghrib- l'exilé - rejoint celle de tous les exclus
