Apollo Palatinus

An image of Apollo, known from a relief base in Sorrento and six freestanding sculptures, represents Apollo as kitharoidos, wearing peplos and shoulder-pinned back mantle and holding a kithara. The original has often been attributed to the Greek sculptor Skopas of Paros. A closer examination of this Apollo's iconography and stylistic peculiarities makes it clear that the original statue was an early Augustan classicizing work. The image of Apollo on the Sorrento Base, freed from any literary associations and analyzed as an independent statue type, is found to be late Hellenistic in style and Roman in concept. No two reflections of this type are alike in style or size, yet all retain the same distinctive iconography. It is concluded that this Apollo type represents the cult statue of Apollo Palatinus dedicated by Augustus in 28 B.C
