The paper deals with attitudes, policies, and politics in relation to varieties of Danish. The societal treatment of Danish varieties is characterized by referring to analyses of the activities of two public institutions, the language council and the school, which both play an important role in sustaining a strong standard language ideology. This ideology organizes the Danish varieties into a strict hierarchy with high Copenhagen at the top and low Copenhagen at the very bottom. Attitudinal patterns are also reported from studies based on direct and indirect methods of data collection. When consciously aware of displaying language attitudes, Danes consistently reproduce the official hierarchy of varieties. When unaware of displaying attitudes, however, young Danes in particular show an upgrading of low Copenhagen speech that accords with the spread of this accent
