Emphasis on the nation's changing job market has received much attention during the period since 1958. Special emphasis has been focused upon the structural allocation of manpower by those who attributed the recent high level of unemployment to changes in structural demand for labor. In the many studies produced during the recent period concerning the national employment situation, there has seldom been one that did not lend some attention to the critical employment situation of Negro workers. While there is no dearth of information relative to general levels of Negro employment or spatial variation in the employment situation of the group, there have been very few studies that have sought to analyze the position of Negro Americans in the academic marketplace.'
