History gives testimony: at the beginning of the twentieth century, there were over one hundred Buddhist temples and prayer tents [kibitki] functioning in Kalmykia. Of these, ninety-eight were in the Kalmyk steppe of Astrakhan Guberniia, the remainder in the Greater Derbet ulus of Stavropol' Guberniia, and in Kalmyk settlements in the Terek, Urals, and Don Cossack areas
