Une des premières collections de poids à peser l'or akan, sinon la première, a été, au début des années 1870, celle d'un Français, Marie-Joseph Bonnat. Cet homme peu instruit et doté d'une grande curiosité d'esprit, était alors captif des Ashanti (dans le Ghana actuel). Cette collection, qu'il avait rapportée en France, semble avoir disparu sans laisser de traces
