O artigo examina as idéias políticas de Godwin e Shelley, tendo como pano de fundo a emergência e crise do radicalismo "jacobino" inglês, durante a década de 1790. A análise busca mostrar o desenvolvimento - e impasses - dos ideais libertários destes autores diante das profundas transformações em curso, entre o fim do século XVIII e o começo do século XIX
