Japan is a happy hunting ground for the demographer and for the comparative sociologist. Among other things it provides an opportunity, if not to answer, at least to add substantially to the evidence concerning one important question : how truly universal is the association of the “demographic revolution” with industrialisation? Does the same configuration of trends as was observed in Western societies recur also in societies with entirely different cultural traditions
