This investigation of the duration of initial hospitalization of a cohort of male schizophrenics is viewed as a partial replication of Hollingshead's New Haven study which revealed that the social class level of the patient is inversely related to the risk of continuous long-term hospitalization. This generalization was confirmed at a highly significant level in the present population. Moreover, additional findings revealed that the relationship could not be accounted for by such factors as class differences in admission procedures, clinical characteristics, or condition at the time of discharge
