What are these screens in front of which today's children spend so much time? Are they real or simply hoped for or dreamt of? What do these children have to say about their actual or desired use of screens? Interviews with small groups of children in the 8-12 age-group provide some answers to these questions. Two themes in particular are developed: first, uses of satellite dishes in immigrant families and representations of "elsewhere" based on TV programmes; secondly, the use of computers by children who have recently acquired such equipment
