The present articles makes an analysis of the first edition of the first edition of the Arte da língua brasilica, of the jesuit Luís Figueira. The historical aspects that had taken the publication of this grammar are investigated, as well as its use for the jesuits with the objective to establish aliances with the aboriginal peoples in the conquest of the Maranhão and the wars against the West-Indische Compagnie
