Objectives: understand the meanings attributed by members of the Brazilian Academy of Nursing History to Institutional Rites and how the rites act in the construction of professional nursing identities. Method: qualitative and exploratory research on professional identities, with an Oral History approach. The interviews were carried out with the founding members and with the members who underwent the Rite of Induction and became Academic members. The body of documents was subjected to Content Analysis, by Bardin, and discussed in light of the theory of identities construction, by Claude Dubar. Results: two categories were identified, the first reveals the importance of rites within the process of building professional identities and social image, and the other reveals the duality between professional identity and social image. Final considerations: rites are capable of conferring belonging and recognition on those social actors involved in them, in addition to contributing to the process of identity construction
