Las principales transformaciones sociales y polticas, as como la implementacin de las polticas urbanas neoliberales han alterado profundamente la estructuracin de las ciudades en Espaa y Amrica Latina. Entre sus consecuencias destaca la reconquista de los centros urbanos por las clases acomodadas, que conlleva la expulsin de los hogares con menores ingresos, un fenmeno generalmente abordado mediante el trmino de gentrifi cacin. Hasta el momento y en comparacin con la abundante literatura anglosajona sobre gentrifi cacin, pocos investigadores han prestado atencin al fenmeno en estas dos reas geogrfi cas. Este artculo responde a esta laguna y ofrece una exhaustiva revisin de los debates sobre gentrifi cacin que se han producido en Espaa y Amrica Latina durante la ltima dcada, siguiendo dos presupuestos. En primer lugar, se hace hincapi en la necesidad de caracterizar los discursos de la gentrifi cacin en Espaa y Amrica Latina, para conseguir una adecuada apropiacin y contextualizacin del concepto. Y en segundo lugar, se afi rma que la gentrifi cacin en Espaa y Amrica Latina difi ere sustancialmente de los procesos observados en el mundo anglosajn.
