Subjects matched the location of a pure tone above or below a narrow band of noise with the word above or the word below presented visually on an oscilloscope screen. The position of the tone in relation to the noise was matched faster with the word above than with the word below. It is not at all obvious how this asymmetry can be explained in terms of the semantic marking analysis recently proposed by Chase & Clark to account for similar results obtained in a unimodal visual version of the experiment
