A critical reflection on career change and personal cheffing

The culinary profession and discourses advocating the pursuit of passions have gained prominence in the American cultural landscape, along with having captured scholarly attention. Yet, research on career changes into culinary entrepreneurship is lacking. Drawing on interview and survey data, this article examines career changers' motivations for pursuing personal cheffing. Participants wanted to follow their passion, and they also were attracted to the autonomy and flexibility of personal cheffing. Most were satisfied with their new work, but this study also suggests some limitations to discourses promoting the pursuit of self-fulfillment through work. The physical toll and low and/or unstable pay were not ideal, and not everyone can feasibly prioritize self-fulfillment. Moreover, the social/cultural context and/or one's social position influence what passions are seen as possible careers and what activities feel self-fulfilling. The impetus to do what you love has the potential to reproduce existing social divisions and inequalities
