The image which a person holds regarding another may be the result, or it may be rather the cause, of his attitude toward the other. False images often come from genuine illusions, errors of judgment, or social defamation, and are not always rationalizations of pre-existing love or hostility. Interpersonal misunderstandings do not automatically correct themselves but may become chronic and reciprocal, the persons adjusting their behavior in various ways to the false images.
