Le debat sur le statut de la classe moyenne anglaise au XIX e me siecle a ete inextricablement lie ces dernieres decennies avec le debat mene parallelement concernant le relatif declin national de l'Angleterre. Le « deficit » suppose au sein de cette classe a ete defini en termes de modele de role associe a la reussite d'une societe industrielle a un moment donne. Trois phases de ce debat sont distinguees : la these se rapportant a la perception d'une superiorite du modele industriel francais ; la these refletant la mise en avant par M. Thatcher du role de l'entrepreneur ; enfin la mise en evidence d'un echec de la classe moyenne a creer une strategie industrielle. Cet article conclut que le recent concept de « capitalisme bien-eleve » offre une voie a la comprehension des rapports entre la classe moyenne et l'aristocratie dans la Grande-Bretagne du siecle dernier
