of essay/examination type questions and a note on further reading. The demands of summarizing such a wide range of material is reflected in the uneven quality of the analysis. Thus the discussion of social policy and expenditure cuts, particularly the latter, is quite brief and unoriginal. This is in marked contrast to other sections such as the concise review of the literature on women and housing, and the useful comparison of racism anel sexism in the production and consumption of goods and services. For an avowed Marxist text it is somewhat eccentric to spend the first half of the book discussing demographic and family change and not the key explanatory, and therefore organizing, concepts of the mode of production and class. Furthermore, if the text had started at chapter six, there would have been room to cover other important aspects of structured inequality such as work, health and welfare. There are also disappointingly few references to material published in the 1980s. This patchy book is unlikely to supplant the established Marxist or non-Marxist textg on social structure of modern Britain reading lists
