de Oliveira entered the history of Brazilian literature for being, amongst other things, the first poet born in Brazil who published a literary work, namely a play in Spanish (Hay amigo para amigo, Coimbra, 1663) and also a book of poetry in four languages (Música do Parnaso, Lisbon, 1705).The eight years he spent at the University of Coimbra (1657-1665), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree, were decisive for him to acquire the kind of cultural capital that would help him later on to climb the social ladder, once he returned to Salvador da Bahia. The network of contacts he had established in Coimbra was of great value to him, both during his professional life and in the field of classicist poetic codes
