In this work, it was investigated how Boethius (ca.480-524) defines music and the musician in his treatise De Institutione Musica, in which he resumes Greco-Roman sources, in particular philosophical ones, to discuss the relationship between music and morality, i.e. music as a means of moral education, considering its power to ennoble or pervert men.In this sense, we investigated the referred treatise within the context defined by the advancement of Christianity on the intellectual production of the fifth and sixth centuries AD.In order to further investigate how the boetian text relates to the cultural context in which it is inserted, we make a comparative analysis between the boetian treatise and Augustine of Hippo's (354-430) De Musica, written around a hundred years before, that presents music in the aspect of poetic metric. The focus is on the discursive construction of Boethius and Augustine of Hippo, in its relationship to the "classical heritage" in the music field. Thus, the comparative analysis seeks to observe the points of contact between the referred musical treatises in order to investigate how the two thinkers bring authors and theories from Antiquity related to the moral aspects of music, to their work in the late-ancient context in which they write
