The objective of the present work is to accompany the process of development of the folklore studies in Rússia, in which the essay "Folklore as an specifíc form of art", written in 1929, by Piotr Bogatyriov and Roman Jakobson, occupies the central place. We present the translation and the analysis of this famous work that pre-determined the way of the modem folklore studies. Its main subject is the delimitation between the folklore and the literature traced with the application of the linguistic terms langue and parole. From this comparison, there were gotten the most important characteristics of the folklore, necessary for such delimitation. As the analysis shows, they can be used in the studies of the modem folklore and even of the mass literature. As an example of application of the functional method of the studies of the popular culture, created by Piotr Bogatyriov, we include the translation and the analysis of his essay "The active-collective, passive-collective, productive and no productive ethnographic facts" published in 1939
