A autora analisa a expressão "ofício impossível" tal como aparece em dois textos de Sigmund Freud: seu "Prefácio à 'Juventude desorientada' de Aichhorn" (1925) e "Análise terminável e interminável" (1937). Em seguida, elabora uma interpretação atual à expressão freudiana, entendendo-a como piada, na associação aos três ofícios: governar, curar e educar. Aborda ainda três aspectos talvez cruciais para o futuro: o poder, a clínica e a ética
