This paper examines the factors affecting the success of recent privatization efforts in Argentina, as effected by the government of President Carlos Menem. Following a brief overview of the history and recent fate of state-owned enterprises in the country, the study advances three main theses accounting for the success of Menem's program: (1) that Peronist ideology allowed for a relatively easier transition from state to private ownership than many observers have presumed; (2) that the weakness of intermediary institutions allowed Menem to mobilize popular sector support for the government's privatization aims; and (3) that opposition to the sale of state-owned enterprises had been weakened significantly by a number of factors, chief among them a growing interest on the part of the corporate sector in acquiring public enterprises where regulation had been fairly lax. The paper closes with a discussion of the economic consequences of privatization in the case of Argentina
