  • Culture in contemporary Milan

    Open Access•Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2022

In 1881, Giovanni Verga defined Milan as ‘ la città più città d'Italia ’ (‘Italy's most urban city’). A statement of some significance, as at that time Rome and Turin could each legitimately claim to have much greater political if not economic clout. Almost one and a half centuries later, the role of the capitale morale as the pulsing heart of a country incessantly searching for both a modern national identity and a city-centred narrative remains…

  • The new Koreans

    Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2017

While the Korean peninsula is again at the centre of global security concerns, knowledge and understanding of the extraordinary economic and social journey of South Korea since the Korean War remain insufficient. And yet it is not an exaggeration to say that this is the only country on Earth that has risen from poverty and underdevelopment to glitz and innovation—as exemplified by global brands such as Samsung and Hyundai, stars like Psy or mega …

  • Regulation and investment in infrastructure

  • Corporate Europe in the US

    Federico Barbiellini Amidei, Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Business History•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 18

While Italy's catch-up in the course of the twentieth century has been nothing short of extraordinary, it has failed to produce a large number of global business players. Nonetheless, half a century ago an Italian company concluded what was at the time the largest-ever foreign takeover of a US company. The paper analyses Olivetti's acquisition of Underwood and frames it in the broader picture of the literature on the management and performance of…

  • The Outsourcing of “Creative” Work and the Limits of Capability

Open Access•Feichin Tschang, Feichin Ted Tschang et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Engineering…•2010

The animation industry, like many information-technology-enabled services sectors, has been of interest to many developing countries interested in developing services outsourcing industries. We analyze the case of the Philippines' animation industry. This paper investigates the outsourcing process in animation and the nature of capabilities within that, with the goal of contributing to a more general understanding of services outsourcing. We exam…

  • The gender dimension of business elites

Michela Gamba, Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Gender is an important, albeit understudied, dimension in the analysis of business elites. In this paper we analyze the importance of women in the board of directors of listed Italian companies since 1934. We show that women are less represented in boards in Italy than in other comparable OECD countries, but also that listed companies are less open to women than other centres of powers, such as the public administration and liberal professions. I…

  • Singapore Inc. Goes Shopping Abroad

Andrea Goldstein, Pavida Pananond•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Efficient state-led, market-driven intervention has been the hallmark of Singapore's success story but the exportability of state credibility, systemic efficiencies and local advantages into alien contexts is a matter of academic and political controversy. This article scrutinises Singapore's experience with outward investment in order to objectively examine the role of Temasek and of the government-linked corporations (GLCs). It uses the case of…

  • What future for Italian industry

Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2003

  • Embraer

    Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Much has been written on the macroeconomic aspects of the economic reform process in Latin America, but much less has been published on its microeconomic results, especially at the company level. This paper explores how Embraer, a Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, transformed itself after privatization to become a world market leader in a high- tech industry traditionally dominated by companies based in member countries of the Organization for Eco…

  • Business Governance in Brazil and South Africa

    Open Access•Andrea E Goldstein, Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2001•References: 1

The effect of globalization on national economic and political strategies is a central theme in policy analysis. At the core of this debate is business governance, interpreted in this paper in a wide sense as the laws, rules, and routines that govern large-scale corporations. Conventional wisdom has it that cross-national patterns of business governance are converging on the so-called Anglo-Saxon, capital-market driven model. In this paper I anal…

  • Recent works on Italian capitalism

Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•1998

Italy's capitalism has traditionally differed from that of its major trading partners: state‐owned enterprises have played a larger role, securities markets have been relatively less developed, while corporate power in the private sector has been concentrated to an unusual extent in the hands of a few family‐controlled business groups. Since the 1970s, Italian big business has seemed unable to steer a new course in an increasingly global economy.…

  • The Politics and Economics of Privatization

    Andrea E Goldstein, Andrea Goldstein•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Latin…•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This paper examines the factors affecting the success of recent privatization efforts in Argentina, as effected by the government of President Carlos Menem. Following a brief overview of the history and recent fate of state-owned enterprises in the country, the study advances three main theses accounting for the success of Menem's program: (1) that Peronist ideology allowed for a relatively easier transition from state to private ownership than m…
